How to Book a Luxury Cruise Around the World
A luxury cruise around the world takes about 4 months. While other passengers get on and off, you remain on board for the entire cruise season, visiting dozens of countries. Although an around-the-world cruise can cost more than 0,000, you will be able to move into your cabin and use it as a home base instead of dealing with crowded airports, flight delays, baggage restrictions and other travel problems that can ruin a trip.
Decide what cruise you want to take.Even world cruises won't take you to every possible destination, so you'll have to compare several to choose the ports of call you most want to visit. You should also consider the departure location.
Call early to book your passage. You will not be able to get discounts by waiting until the last minute, when the cruise line drops the price in order to fill empty cabins. However, you may see some discount for booking well in advance.
Buy insurance to recover your looses in case something comes up and you can't make your cruise. You may not get most of what you paid returned to you, so you'll want to buy trip insurance. You should also check into your medical insurance coverage and buy additional insurance to cover you while you're on your cruise.
Do your research before packing.
- Although you may leave Florida in warm, sunny weather, the ports of call you may visit could be experiencing cold or wet weather. Be sure to pack warm clothing, jackets and rain gear. This is especially important if you are traveling to the Southern Hemisphere, where the seasons are reversed.
- The customs in some countries may dictate what clothes you can wear. Some may frown on wearing shorts in public, while others have laws prohibiting certain items of dress, especially for women. Don't discover too late that you have to stay on board because you don't have acceptable clothing.
- Most cruise ships have formal dinners that require evening gowns and tuxedos. There may be other events at which specific dress is required.
- When deciding which cruise to take, compare the length of the cruise to the number of ports of call. If the cruise is 100 days and you only visit 50 ports of call, then you will spend 50 days on the ship with nothing to look at but water. A shorter cruise may be a better deal because the ship is faster and so will spend less time on the open sea.
- Consider buying an international cell phone plan if staying in touch with friends and family back home is important. You can bring your laptop computer on the cruise and make calls over the Internet after you get back to the ship.
- Remember that there are a lot of things you'll have to pay for in addition to your passage. You will have to pay for your own beverages, sightseeing tours and tips to ship's crew, among other things.
