The Swimsuit Styles That Are In and Out for Summer

In:

“I am always about clean-cut, well-defined bikinis that suit your body type. At the moment I am also really into one-piece swimsuits, much more than ever, like our Forte dei Marmi or Los Angeles. I also am really into sleek and minimal sporty pieces, like our new Okinawa bikini top or Hossegor bandeau. I think now more than ever it is cool to mix and match different bikini tops and bottoms with different materials and colours, etc. I have always designed our collections to enable customers to do this, but I think now it is really interesting to experiment matching different colours and materials together!” — Anna Laub, creative director of Prism

Out:

“I am really not a fan of 'cutout' swimsuits! I think the idea of having stripey tan lines is not appealing, and generally I think they are not flattering, and a bit over-the-top for the beach especially, this summer!” — Anna Laub, creative director of Prism

“One-pieces, high-waist bottoms, fringe, and mesh!” — Morgan Curtis, women’s swimwear designer for Solid & Striped

Out:

“This summer people are looking for a cleaner look so you’re seeing less scrunch bikini bottoms and ruffles.” — Morgan Curtis, women’s swimwear designer for Solid & Striped

In:

“Small, cheeky cuts are in! If done right, they are more flattering for any size booty. Your backside will get lost in too much fabric if you have a smaller booty, and if you have a larger booty, too much fabric will make that booty look bigger. You just need to rock it with confidence and class.” — Lyndie Irons and Naomi Newirth, co-owners of Acacia

Out:

“Styles with hardware are out. You can't go wrong with a classic, simple style. Jewels and rings, etc., just become extra accessories you don't need and, if done wrong, make suits look cheap.” — Lyndie Irons and Naomi Newirth, co-owners of Acacia

In:

“Full-piece suits are back in like never before! I'm loving seeing women of all different shapes and sizes rocking a full-piece.” — Tori Praver, designer of Tori Praver

Out:

“The suits that are out for me are ones with tons of hardware and that have too much going on. I feel like what is in right now is very simple and understated.” — Tori Praver, designer of Tori Praver

“For us we are using lots of delicate details like laces, printed mesh, laser-cut trims, and other textures but still on relatively clean shapes. I don’t know if they will be in or not, but I love them!” — Nicky Zimmermann, designer of Zimmermann

Out:

“I always love to see a woman at the pool or the beach who is happy to invest into a well-made swimsuit that suits her shape and that reflects her personal style. Your swimsuit should just be an extension of the rest of your wardrobe. When you see someone in a swimsuit that is poorly cut or a bit too trend focused, you can get some scary stuff happening!” — Nicky Zimmermann, designer of Zimmermann

“Go seamless! Seamless technology is a new innovation to the market this summer. We loved it so much and designed it into our suits this season. Not only does this make the styles reversible, but also ensures no digging—I promise! Retro-inspired swimsuits are really big this season, especially high-waist! This is a great style to get you into summer and can also be sexy with a higher cut on the leg inseam. Also, colour-/print-blocking. We have always mixed prints, but this season it’s also about colorblocking to provide contrast, curve-flattering silhouettes, and detail to suits.” — Gabby Sabharwal, designer and founder of Giejo

Out:

“Swimwear that makes you feel self-conscious. Confidence never goes out of style.” — Gabby Sabharwal, designer and founder of Giejo
